I am researching the Newberys of the Stockland and Membury area. I am very new to this and have currently only gone as far back as my great grandfather William Alexander Newbery 1856-1892 of Membury. He was the brother of the known artist Francis Henry Newbery 1855-1946 known often as Fra Newbery. Although his life is very well documented I am yet to discover the names and dates of his ancestors, starting in particular with his father who would be my great great grandfather. I am very excited to discover so many generations of Newberys in this area and I would be very greatful to anyone that can help me find the missing pieces of my puzzle.

I am trying to get more information for my gggrandfather James Newbery born in 1834 at Ridge, Stockland. Records show he was a footman, starting of as a servant in the vicarage in Stockland. He was married to Leah Jouxson (18/05/1836) on in 1856. I am also looking for details for my ggggrandfather Mark Newbery (1798) born in either Stockland or Dalwood. He was married to Martha Collings (1795) in 1820. I know he was a shoemaker. It would be splendid if you know more and can help my quest for learning more about my family such as what is Ridge, and apart from the vicarage would James Newbery be a footman in another house? Here is hoping David

My g grandfather Thomas James Cunningham left Todmorden in Lancashire round about 1880 and his name appears on the 1881 census as residing in Dalwood, Stockland, Devon as a flax worker. I would like to know if anyone knows this address and can tell me anything about flax mills in the area. Thank you in anticipation!

I'm looking for any information on my GGG Grandparents Benjamin & Catherine Elston. They were married, (but not born) in Stockland in 1810. Six of their eight children were born and baptised in Stockland. They later moved to Crewkerne and South Perrot where Benjamin was a blacksmith. Was he a blacksmith in Stocklan? Can anyone shed light on this?

Researching Albert Eli or Eli Albert Hussey. Possibly brought from Ireland he was a flax dresser, was there a mill around Stockland? There is a Dalwood connection from Census and Albert Eli appeared to have married a Louise(a)North, she may not have been his first wife. My Grandfather William George Hussey was last of 6 children and was born in Chard. Would like information of any kind related

John Hussey (1594-1643) was born in Stockland and married Elizabeth Osmond at Stockland in about 1625. John was later vicar at Okehampton, Devon until his death. At least 8 children born in Devon. Interested in any Stockland connections and confirmation of his father as William Hussey.

Looking for my ancestors- NEWBERY family. 4 x g.granfather William Newbery m. Susanna Starr Widworthy 1792.William believed to be born Honiton 1756 and to be son of William Newbery & Elizabeth Paul. This William possibly b.1729 STOCKLAND and his father possibly also William of Stockland (Gough alias Newbery) who married Sarah Glanvell of honiton 1726. I am trying to proove the link back beyond William & Susanna Starr as the rest is conjecture. All I know for certain is that this William was not christened in Widworthy. There is a William Newbery living in Widworthy mentioned in the manorial court rolls in 1559. If anyone can give me any information on the Newbery family that would help please contact me.

I am researching my Sweetland ancestors born in Stockland in the 1800s. I have an address of Annerhill on the 1871 census. Does anyone know whereabouts this would have been in the village? Also whereabouts the Infants School was under the name Trott? Other addresses nearby were Baggston Farm, Whellers Cottages, Little East Woods, East Woods Farm, Holcombe Pit etc. etc. There was also a carpenters, grocers and blacksmiths shop nearby. Thanks for any info anyone can provide. Sue.

I am searching the JACKSON family. Daniel Jackson was born in St James, Clerkenwell, London in 1771 (I think). He married Agnes Troughton in 19 May 1793. One of his 10 children was William Jackson born 4 Dec 1798. Now here comes my problem - William married Ann Berry in 1820 and as far as I can make out there was only one child of that relationship - Edwin. I am thinking there must have been more than one child here. Edwin was my gg grandfather. I am thinking that William's wife may have died and he remarried, because on a number of Census there is a William & Martha, living in the same area - I am hoping someone out there may have some solution for me - cheers.

Am I doing the right thing? I am not good with computers and as a result I have only just found this web site. I have lived in and researched Stockland history for over thirty years and with the archives I have copied and collected I could help with the majority of these queries. My interest is general and not confined to families, only if they lived in or owned the properties I study. These queries go back so many years. Are they still not answered. Where on earth do I start? Advice please !

Trying to find a baptism record for a man born in Stockland 1842. He was called Henry and married using the surname Harris in Bridport in 1860. His fathers name given as "supposed Henry". Only records before his marriage is the previous census (1851) when he was living with his mother Sarah and a Joseph Richards. Don't think Sarah and Joseph actually married, but all present in household were recorded as Richards. Sarah was also born in Stockland about 1816. Don't know if her maiden name was Harris or something else. any help greatly appreciated. Neil

Items we throw away such as bed, television, clothes, furniture, printer, toys, sofa and computer can pass to someone in your community. Recycling is an effective way to cut down on the use of these limited resources as well as promoting community involvement in the process. If you haven't heard yet, there is wonderful organization called Free Give Group ( http://www.freegive.co.uk ). Free Give Group connects people who are giving and getting unwanted items for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills and, at the same time, helping someone in your community by gifting them the item you no longer need. Another benefit of using Freegive is that it encourages poeple to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. By using Freegive, not only are you able to get rid of your item with the minimum of fuss; you will also be doing your part in stopping another reusable item ending up in a landfill. It's completely free to join and everything posted must be free. Freegive group is active in all England regions. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/england.htm Freegive group is active in all London boroughs. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/londonfg.htm Freegive group is active in all Scotland towns. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/sco.htm Free give group is active in all United Kingdom and other countries across the world. Find a group near you at http://www.freegive.co.uk/groups.htm This is a great idea! Encouraging people to reuse and recycle things by giving them away and not sending them to the garbage bin! I think freegive ( http://www.freegive.co.uk ) is a great way to build a bond in the community and it's always good to recycle. I think it's a fantastic idea and everyone should join!

Hi, I am after any info on the Strawbridges. My Great Grandmother was Rosamund Strawbridge born c1860, who I believe was the daughter of Robert Strawbridge. Rosamund married William Bright in 1892 and had 3 daughters - Ellen, Elizabeth and Margie and 2 sons - Samuel and Dick. Samuel is my Grandfather. I would also be grateful if anyone could tell me how to get in touch with the Matthew Strawbridge whose website is no longer active and if the book on the Stockland Strawbridges is still available and if so how can I get hold of a copy other than phoning author direct as I am slightly deaf so don't like using the phone. My husband is descended from Samuel Newberry Goff/Gough who was born in Stockland in 1783, the son of Thomas Newberry Gough and, I think, Ann Beer. He and two siblings John and Ann moved to Donyatt, Somerset in the early 19th century, possibly with their mother Ann. Would be interested to know if anyone knows how the double name originated. It seems to go back to the 17th century.

My great great grandparent's were Elizabeth (Betty) Bromfield & Thomas Warren married 27/3/1821 in Stockland. Thomas Warren's parent's were John Warren & Grace Beer. Prior to 1822 they moved to Dalwood were their children were born. On the 1841 & 1851 census the family were living at 17 Cullverwell, Dalwood, Devon. On the 1851 census it says that Elizabeth was 52 and born in Uffculme, Devon. I have been unable to find a birth or parent's for Elizabeth/Betty.

I am looking for anyone who knew a Henry or Mary Manley who lived in Stockland, Devon from 1925 onwards (roughly) I have been told his nickname was gypsy as he was a bit of a character, well known, as he lived in a caravan for years on golden hill and then moved to Bucehayes Farm, he had about nine children, one who I think was my mother. Unfortunately he died in a fire on his farm in 1972. Anyone remember him

For the attention of Nigel Strawbridge regarding his reply in 2008 to my original post in 2006 asking for information about George & Rhoda Farrant Nigel, Sorry for my extremely belated reply! I had initially checked the website at regular intervals for replies but had then given up. Since then my research has moved on considerably so I had forgotten about this site. I had found 14 of George & Rhoda's children and then on the 1901 census their grandson, Harry Strawbridge. Thank you for taking the time to reply and I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond! Hello Gloucester Board: I am looking for a John Lugg who married Jane Deighton (Dighton). They married in 1627, perhaps in Gloucester, then immigrated to America maybe in 1638. He had land in Boston in 1639. Does anyone have information on this family? I am trying to connect John Lugg ( as a possible sibling ) to a woman named Mary Lugg who married a man named Richard Newburgh Gent. in Devon. Richard Newburgh Gent. m. Mary LUGG 1633 Dalwood My question is, is John the brother of Mary Lugg? Can anyone give me more info on John Lugg's parents and siblings? My early search hasn't turned up much on John's family, but his wife's family is fairly well connected. Her father was a Dr. John Deighton - a surgeon in Gloucester. There may also be a Dabinott connection. I am suspecting that John Lugg may have travelled to New England with Richard Newbury.

My great X 4 grandmother on 1851 census said she was born Stockland. That might have been the case but she was baptised HANNAH VINCENT at Yarcombe on 13th March 1768, daughter of JOHN VINCENT and HANNAH (formally BEER nee HAYMAN). My HANNAH bap 1768 had an illegitimate daughter RACHEL baptised Yarcombe 25th December 1787. HANNAH married ELIAS CARTER at Yarcombe in 1789. HANNAH & ELIAS went to live in his home parish of Harpford, whilst RACHEL VINCENT was cared for by her grandparents. RACHEL married FRANCIS WYATT at Yarcombe in 1810. Does anyone recognise these names. Particularly BEER or HAYMAN - I wonder if they are the Stockland connection.

My great great grandfather William Amor (born abt 1787 in Stockland)) and grandmother Charlotte Amor (born abt 1788 in Chard, Sommerset)used to live there. I now live in Autralia but will be coming over for a family visit and will try and get to Stockland. Many thanks for this website. Regards Elaine

I am researching the Knott family. So far my research has taken me to Somerset but it has been difficult tracing beyond 1712 so far. Family Wills suggest most of the previous generations come from Stockland. A recent visit to Devon record office suggests I am on the right track however, I cannot find a direct connection between the Stockland Knotts and the Somerset Knotts. Records show the same names throughout the generations such as Nathaniel, Thomas,William and John are evident. The main occupations of the Knotts I am looking for are Tanners and Reverends. The Stockland Knotts were classed as Yeomen. The Reverends of the family moved mainly to Somerset to take up their positions in places such as Whitestaunton and Warmbrook. My direct descendant the Rev.William Knott took up his position at Puckington, Somerset at the end of the 1760s. His father, was also William Knott who was thought to have been born in Dinnington Somerset in 1712 however, this may not be true as he may have been born in Stockland. Could anyone help me if they have any knowledge of the Stockland Knotts, information would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Martin Wilde

I'm trying to trace Elizabeth Drews or Druce, born about 1792, the daughter of John Drews and Rebecca Rawlings. Elizabeth married James Diamond (Dimond/Diment) in Winsham, Somerset on 21/6/1815 and between then and 1820 they moved to St Peter Port, Guernsey, CI, where she died in 1864. Her Channel Islands records show her father as coming from Stockford, Devon. We think this should actually be Stockland. There is a possibility that Elizabeth and James had a son while still in England, as I've found a listing on the Winsham Museum Web Baptism Register which reads:- DIAMOND JOHN ADAMS SON ELIZABETH DIAMOND NOVEMB1819, but I haven't been able to prove this as yet. Any information on the date and place of birth of Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone has information on her parents or husband would also be appreciated. Regards, Diane Australia defect@lizzy.com.au

Its taken me 3 years to get this far, today is a happy day for me!! I have William Brooks born 1825 in Stockland. He had a brother John, who may have been his twin. His father was also named William, a tanner; and his mother was Rebecca. The parents were born in Exeter but appear to have lived in Stockland for a time. William jr and John had a sister Emma, possibly born in Stockland in 1833. Does this ring a bell with anyone, and why did William & Rebecca move from Exeter to Stockland?

My grandfather Henry Letten was born in 1918 in a village called Offwell in Devon. His father Samuel Letten also born in Offwell around 1876 married Bessie Mary Wood born in Stockland 1882. My grandfather knew that his mother was in some way related to Sir Henry Wood (last night of the proms)and I am trying to find out how. Unfortunately Wood unlike Letten is a popular surname and I am having difficulty even locating Bessie's family. Any information would be appreciated, Julie Ferry (nee Letten)

Sincerest apologies if my query is somewhat off-topic but I am trying to identify a delightful piece of music which was being played when we visited Stockland Church on or about 19-April-2007. The piece was being practised by a young man on flute accompanied by a young lady on piano, and it was a magical moment for us all in the beautiful setting of the church, which brought back special memories for our elderly relatives with whom we were visiting. However, since we are unsure of the title of the piece (possibly Midnight/Moonlight Madonna or similar?) we would be very grateful for any information. Thanks and regards -AL.

I have her parents names, but I would like to know Zachariah's parents names, dates, etc. I think his father may have been Samuel. Please feel free to email me at the above address. Thank you.

Subj: Robert of Exeter d 1546 Hello All: I am doing genealogical research on Robert Tooker/Tucker of Exeter. He was Mayor of Exeter ca 1543 and died in 1546. I am also researching William Tooker/Towker/Toker/Tucker of Maddington Wilts. Robert of Exeter appears on page 352 of the Visitations of Devon. Robert also appears on page 3 of the Visitations of Wilts. William of Maddington Wilts appears on pages 101 and 196 of the Visitations of Wilts. I found online a file which says that Robert Tooker/Tucker of Exeter came from Dalwood, Stockland,Devon. He would have been born there ca 1490 Also that his father William Tucker Esq. was born there in 1473. Would anyone know if there are Dalwood records covering the above individuals? Thank you. I am interested in the TURNER family and in a copy of the reflections of my Great Great Grandpa, GEVART JAMES TURNER, he notes that both my parents were 'born in Stockland in Devon' and that the TURNER family can be traced on the records in the Parish Church, Stockland back to JOSEPH TURNER 1665. Gevart's mother's maiden name was BOWDITCH (MARIA) of scots descent. His father, my Gr,Gr,Gr Grandpa was born on the 27th August 1820 and he died in 1855 having moved to LONDON in 1844. Gevart also mentions a cousin JOHN HOCKEY of The Elms, Chard, Somerset. Gevart states that his father was born on Stockland Hill and his mother at NAP? He goes on to state that; 'My father served his time to the butchering and farming with a distant relative named DRAKE at OTTERY, DEVON who claimed to be the last surviving relative of Admiral Drake.' If anyone has any information or knowledge relating to any of these ramblings I was greatly appreciate a response. In any event I am finally trying to trace my family history and would appreciate any comments on accessing the records of St Michael's Church, Bowditch and any property details or maps of the period around the early 1800's? Thank you. MALCOLM CAREY DAVID TURNER.

I have just found a deed from 1792 involving the sale of property in Stockland viz "Two messuages called Ridge and several closes of land called Path Morr, Leacroft, Little Plot, Holly Close, Slowcroft, The Coppice, all in Stockland, Dorset." One of the parties to the sale was my ancestor Richard HARPER of Poundon, Bucks. I have no idea what he was doing with property in Stockland. Does anyone local recognise any of these properties?

Dear maggie, saw your 2004 message.I am a Letten of Offwell descendent, though we only realized recently as the name was mistranscribed at my 2xgtgrandfathers wedding in Northleigh on June 19th 1834. He was put as Litting and the name stuck. She was Jane Macer but recorded as Masser, to make things even more difficult. Believe he was the John born to Samuel and Susannah, baptised July 1809 with siblings Abraham and Emanuel, but only have the L.D.S transcribed records 1605 to 1815 to go by till I can get to Devon. Link with ANY Letten would be very welcome. John a thatcher, his elder son Henry my gt grandfather. Bast wishes, Jen

In searching for my grandparents Bazley and Summers in Stockland, Devon, I am also trying to find anyone who had any connection with my grandfather's sister, her name was Lilly Bazley, b.abt. 1881, and I THINK she was married to a Charlie Strawbridge (definitely Strawbridge) and had a son, possibly Fred. She took over the licencee of The Phoenix Public House in Axminster after her husband died, in the 1930's and 1940's, possibly as late as the 1950's. Sorry it is so vague but apart from remembering visiting her as a child haven't anymore information. Any info would be appreciated. Pauline

Further to my original message of 09/09/2003. Still no further forward with my FRAMPTON/Stockland research. In fact a complete blank! However, I now see on the Return of Owners of Land,1873-Extracts relating to Stockland, that a small 3 acre plot is attributed to a FRAMPTON. Can anyone shed some light on this? Who this FRAMPTON is for instance. Is there anyone even aware of the faintest FRAMPTON/Stockland connection. Thanks.

Nyas/Nies Stockland surname Further to my message dated 8.6.05, the IGI marriage date of 1808 re James Woodrow and Mary Nyas/Nies must be wrong as in 1808 James was only about 12 years old. I now know that Mary's maidenname was Nyas or Nies (b around 1889) and am pretty sure that her mother was Jane Nyas, b Stockland 1766 (father unknown) and Mary's grandparents Henry and Mary Nyas, married Stockland 6.9.1765. If anyone has Stockland marriage records of 1813-1835, could you please check if a Woodrow-Nyas marriage took place between 1815-1830? Thank you.

I am looking for ancestors or relations of James Newbery born in Stockland in 1845 (although some records show date of birth as 1855). He moved to Dorset in around 1868 and we are interested in how this branch of the family links into the main Stockland family.

I spent a great deal of time in the village in my childhood. My Grandparents owned a cottage called Northcote just on the outskirts. I now live in North Wales and was wondering if any of you Stockland folk could take me a picture of My Grandfathers grave in the village .... bit strange but I never really get a chance to visit. His name was Roy Faircloth and he died in the early 80's. many thanks

Searching for a JAMES WOODROW who married a MARY at Stockland around 1808 according to IGI records (no record of surname of Mary nor parents). Have got the Stockland Marriages 1640 - 1812 booklet from the Devon Family History Society, but I can only find a James Woodrow who married Elizabeth Knight on 02.07.1769. Would like to hear from anyone with the Hoare family name, from Stockland. Can any one in Stockland, take a look in the Graveyard for the Hoare family. My Great Great Grand father Thomas Hoare was a thatcher, and married Emma Willer from Combpyne in 1860, any one with the Willer link can also contact me. as this name was mis spelt on the marriage cert, and birth cert of one child. 1839 it was Willer, 1839 Weller, 1860 Whiller, 1867 Wheeler and in 1873 Whether. See how the name can change and throw you off track.

I have just added Elizabeth Frost, born Stockland 1820, to my tree. I found her also on an Ancestral File on the LDS. Anyone else researching this family? Thanks

I am researching the Bond family who lived in Stockland during the 1700s/early 1800s. I am trying to verify the parents of John Bond who was born there in 1814 and who married Betty Buttle (b Culmstock 1815) at Churchstanton in 1836. I believe his parents might be John Bond baptised 26 Sep 1780 and Elizabeth Carter born 1788 and baptised 25 Dec 1805. They were married on 2 Sep 1813. I would welcome any information on the Stockland Bonds. Many thanks in anticipation....

My paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Boyland born Chaffcombe, daughter (born 1863) of Thomas and Mary Boyland of Stockland. Some dates on 3 generations back to William Boyland b. 1740. Elizabeth married Albert Harvey in Bromley by Bow, East London. My Dad Cecil was born in 1906 in Hackney. I'm not a family history expert but happy to exchange Boyland/Harvey info.

Could anyone tell me the location of 'Hoopers' farm in Stockland? It is listed as a 14 acre farm in the 1851 census. My great grandfather lived there at the time, and I would like to find it.

I am looking for information about my great, great grandfather Charles SMITH married to Elizabeth Shute, who lived at Hoopers, a small farm in Stockland in 1851 according to the census of that year. He had 8 children at that time, the last one Ambrose was born in Stockland in 1850. My great grandfather Henry Charles Smith moved to Kersbrook, East Budleigh, possibly around 1869.

I am looking for information about my great grandfather John Elston who was born in Stockland in 1815, specifically whom his parents were? He married aMelia Norris in 1836 in Kilmington and subsequently married Elizabeth Bromfield in 1868 in Exeter. I know that by 1851 he was living in Exeter. Henry, the first child of John and Amelia was also born in Stockland. I understand that there is also a link to the Newbery family but apart from hearing that there were lots of children (13?), I have no idea what the link is. If anyone has any information that can help me I would be extremely grateful.

Any info about him or his widow Charlotte Elizabeth WEBBER (nee Lawrence) or their relations would be much appreciated. Thanks

I am researching the RADDON Family of East Devon. Five RADDON generations lived in Stockland, namely William Raddon b. 1688, his father John Raddon b. 1663 and grandfather William Raddon b. 1640 and greatgrandfather William Raddon b. 1581. They married into the PAVY, DAVY and PUEY families. I would like to hear from anyone researching these families.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone researching the ANNING family. My research goes back to Henry ANNING born in Dalwood 1568. If anyone has records or history of the mill at Fairmile, nr. Ottery, run by James Anning from early 1600's, I would love to hear from them. I have lots of Anning genealogy records and am happy to share any information which might be of help. Many Thanks from Albany, Western Australia.

Hello I'm researching the Hooper family who lived at Stockland, Devon, England. Joseph Hooper, my Great-Great Grandfather was born there in c.1821. He married Eliza Beasley in c.1842. She was from either Stockland, or Membury. They had several children: James, Enoch, Jane, Nathaniel, George and Edwin Joseph. Edwin was born after the family moved to Bristol in 1850. From there they moved to Hanham which is to the East of Bristol and is actually in Gloucestershire. Edwin then took his family to South Wales in c.1899 and that's where I now live. Joseph was an agricultural labourer at Stockland. At present, I do not know anymore about him or Eliza. I would be grateful for any help. Thank You

I have volunteered to be On-line Parish Clerk for the parishes of Stockland & Dalwood (see the Devon page of GENUKI for info on this project. Can you make a contribution to the "parish chest" - any information you have gathered in the course of researching your Stockland ancestors would be most gratefully received.

Hi Mathew & any other readers. I am getting further back now, 1840 at the moment with my grt x 4 granmother in the 1881 census which I have got from the mormon church. At that time she was a widow aged 41 with 4 children. I am now looking for her husband who must have died between 1872 and 1881. Next check is the 1871 census ... Good luck with your searches. Nigel & Denise.
