My ancestors are William Sillifient Anning (1812 - 1880)and Sarah Elizabeth Rix who came to Australia per Sir Charles Napier in 1842. Although William (a baker)was in London prior to departure, descendants thought his family originally came from Devon or thereabouts, and had some connection to a farm at Vennbridge (near Kenton), and Fairmile (near Ottery St Mary). Some have concluded that William's parents were John Anning (b. 1771 Kenton) and Mary Stokes; others that his parents are James Anning (b. 1778 Kenton, d. 1846) and Elizabeth Stokes. William's 1841 marriage record identifies his father as James Anning, exciseman. William had a brother Henry, a carpenter. I'd be pleased to exchange information with anybody who knows the history of these families. Also - can anybody tell me the significance of Sillifient (spelling varies - Sillifint, Silifient etc), William's second name? The name has continued as a forename for generations.

Hello Julie
I have just discovered that our family name is Anning and not Hanning so I am eager to find out more about the Annings.
My husband is descended from James Anning, born 1796, in Bothenhampton, Dorset.
On 24 April 1821, James married Charlotte Munden, born 27 April 1800, in Bridport, Dorset. (Her parents were William Munden and Mary Way).
James and Charlotte had two children:
Mary Ann Anning, born 1821 in Bridport, Dorset
James Anning, born 1822, in Bridport, Dorset.
I would be so pleased to be able to make a connection.
Regards,Elaine Hanning
