Nyas/Nies Stockland surname Further to my message dated 8.6.05, the IGI marriage date of 1808 re James Woodrow and Mary Nyas/Nies must be wrong as in 1808 James was only about 12 years old. I now know that Mary's maidenname was Nyas or Nies (b around 1889) and am pretty sure that her mother was Jane Nyas, b Stockland 1766 (father unknown) and Mary's grandparents Henry and Mary Nyas, married Stockland 6.9.1765. If anyone has Stockland marriage records of 1813-1835, could you please check if a Woodrow-Nyas marriage took place between 1815-1830? Thank you.

Pamela, just found out that James and Mary married in Lyme Regis on 17th June 1819. Mary's name is written as 'Nias', but I know that many mistakes were made with the writing of names (James and Mary couldn't write themselves) so I am pretty sure that the correct spelling is Nyas and that Mary Nyas was from Stockland and had a mother called Jane Nyas, b. 4.11.1766 (whose parents were Henry and Mary). As Mary had the same surname as her mother's maidenname I am wondering if she was born outside a marriage... It also may explain why she didn't marry until she was about 31.

I am also looking for the surname Nyas, I am not as far back in my search, but it is such an unusual and rare spelling of the surname. I am so pleased to find someone looking for the same spelling.
