My Chick ancestors lived at Hillhouse Stockland in early 20th c. My great grandfather George Chick working as Farm Carter in the area. Can anyone let me know where Hillhouse is please? Or any photos of this place? The closest Hillhouse I can find on OS map is in Yarcombe. Any help appreciated. Many thanks. Merv.

Would anyone be able to describe Broadhayes house to me please? Mu husbands family lived there in the 1850s (LEE) and in the 1870s (KNIGHT). I have searched on the net but can't find what it looked like. Thank you

Hi again, My father has given a slightly different take on things - he thinks George was a tennanted farmer of Broadhayes Farm, part of the Broadhayes House estate. When the estate came to be broken up George, as a sitting tennant, was offered Broadhayes Cottage and 4 acres of land to vacate Broadhayes Farm to allow for it's sale. Apparently, he lived in Broadhayes Cottage with his 1st wife (sorry, no name) and Ada (who was a maid at Broadhayes House) until his 1st wife died. Some time subsequently he married Ada. I asked my father about "Hillhouse" and he doesn't know of it - my only thought that this was an old name or alternative name for Broadhayes House (or farm) as Broadhayes is positioned at the base of Stockland Hill.

I grew up just down the road from Broadhayes and can remember Ada Chick living in Broadhayes Cottage. Whilst I don't remember George, my father is one of the "old timers" of the area and I'm pretty sure that Richard's info is correct. I certainly remember calling it Miss' Chick's House! Unfortunately Hillhouse doesn't ring any bells but I'll ask my dad if he has anymore info that you would find useful.

hi - I've lived here for 20 plus years and there was an elderly lady who lived in Broadhayes Cottage in Broadhayes, Stockland who was the widow of George Chick. local info suggest that he had been the farm manager at broadhayes Farm until c1945 and was then given his own cottage and some land around. it was semi derilict even tho Ada still lived there until the late 1980's. It has sold twice since and has been renovated altho the original cottage can still be seen. we still call it Miss Chick's house! There will be some old timers around that still remember george altho hillhouse doesn't ring a bell !
