I am interested in the TURNER family and in a copy of the reflections of my Great Great Grandpa, GEVART JAMES TURNER, he notes that both my parents were 'born in Stockland in Devon' and that the TURNER family can be traced on the records in the Parish Church, Stockland back to JOSEPH TURNER 1665. Gevart's mother's maiden name was BOWDITCH (MARIA) of scots descent. His father, my Gr,Gr,Gr Grandpa was born on the 27th August 1820 and he died in 1855 having moved to LONDON in 1844. Gevart also mentions a cousin JOHN HOCKEY of The Elms, Chard, Somerset. Gevart states that his father was born on Stockland Hill and his mother at NAP? He goes on to state that; 'My father served his time to the butchering and farming with a distant relative named DRAKE at OTTERY, DEVON who claimed to be the last surviving relative of Admiral Drake.' If anyone has any information or knowledge relating to any of these ramblings I was greatly appreciate a response. In any event I am finally trying to trace my family history and would appreciate any comments on accessing the records of St Michael's Church, Bowditch and any property details or maps of the period around the early 1800's? Thank you. MALCOLM CAREY DAVID TURNER.

Hi Malcolm I was interested to read your information about Gevert Turner, who I think is the brother of Edwin J Turner, my Great Grandfather. However, their father, James Turner, seems to have lived on in London, as I have traced him and Maria through the census records until 1891. There were also two daughters, Emily and Mary. Kind regards Carolyn Davidson

Hi Peter. Better late than never. Have only managed to trace back as far as a JAMES (1820). I understand before this others have traced back to a JOSEPH (1665). Have just re-started my enquiries so will keep you informed. Malcolm Turner.

Hi Jennie Thanks for the information on Maria Bowditch. Have only just started to re-investigate my ancestry and am having to concentrate on the TURNER side at the moment. Will get back to you regarding BOWDITCH if time allows in the future! Again many thanks for your comments. Malcolm Turner

I have several Turners in my tree including George (1824) of Shore Head, Stockland and his father James (1796). Do you have them in your tree as well?

Hi Malcolm I have been researching the Bowditch families of Devon/Dorset for many years and I was interested to read your message. Maria Bowditch was born 7th September 1820, at Stockland, in Devon, and baptised there 8th October 1820. Her parents were David Bowditch and Mary Northam, who came from Stockland. There were several Bowditch families from Stockland - the whole Bowditch line goes all the way back to Norman times in Devon/Dorset, and the pedigree goes back, in fact, to a Saxon by the name of Osmaer who was granted land at "Boudich" on the Devon/Dorset border near Thorncombe. There are quite a few of us Bowditch researchers, so if you need any more help, please ask! Hope that helps a bit - Best wishes, Jennie

Hi Malcolm, I have no connection to your ancestors but I thought you might also like to post your message on the Devon Family History Society (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ and click on WWWBoard) as I know there is someone there researching DRAKE. Good luck Sharon
