Stockland Genealogical Message Board: Post #362, 2007-02-14

I am interested in the TURNER family and in a copy of the reflections of my Great Great Grandpa, GEVART JAMES TURNER, he notes that both my parents were 'born in Stockland in Devon' and that the TURNER family can be traced on the records in the Parish Church, Stockland back to JOSEPH TURNER 1665. Gevart's mother's maiden name was BOWDITCH (MARIA) of scots descent. His father, my Gr,Gr,Gr Grandpa was born on the 27th August 1820 and he died in 1855 having moved to LONDON in 1844. Gevart also mentions a cousin JOHN HOCKEY of The Elms, Chard, Somerset. Gevart states that his father was born on Stockland Hill and his mother at NAP? He goes on to state that; 'My father served his time to the butchering and farming with a distant relative named DRAKE at OTTERY, DEVON who claimed to be the last surviving relative of Admiral Drake.' If anyone has any information or knowledge relating to any of these ramblings I was greatly appreciate a response. In any event I am finally trying to trace my family history and would appreciate any comments on accessing the records of St Michael's Church, Bowditch and any property details or maps of the period around the early 1800's?
