I am looking for ancestors or relations of James Newbery born in Stockland in 1845 (although some records show date of birth as 1855). He moved to Dorset in around 1868 and we are interested in how this branch of the family links into the main Stockland family.

All, Just in case it is of use, my name is also Chris Newbery. My parents are Malcolm & Sheila Newbery and I have a sister Samantha Newbery. On my fathers side, his brother is Trevor Newbery who is married to Kristine Newbery and they have two children, Helen and Jonathan Newbery. Out of interest my father told me the other day that our surname was originally spelt Newberry but that his great grandfather dropped one of the r's as was the fashion in some parts at the time. Feel free to contact me should you so wish on newberychris@hotmail.com Kind regards, Chris Newbery

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately the James Newbery you are descended from is not the one I am seeking as my great grandfather left Dalwood and moved to Dorset when he was a young man where he raised his family. Once again thank you for replying Chris

My great grandfather was a James Newbery, married to Annie?, and they lived at Stockland then Knapp Farm, Kilmington. He was a bit of an entrpreneur, owning several proporties on which he collected rent, and he also did boot repairs. His children were Nell (married Walter Bazley and they continued to live at Knapp Farm), my grandfather Frederick Evan (married Mary Emma Genge from Whitchurch Canonicorum and they lived in Axminster), Sidney (married Mary ? from Carluke in Scotland, was a missionary in the Congo then returned to Kilmington), Meg (married ? Spiller and lived in Chard), Elsie (married? lived in Kilmington), Frank (married Lily? and lived in Seaton) and Tom killed by a car when he was a boy. As far as I know James' father was called Robert (but possibly Thomas) - he was a gang-mower and reaper who used to travel up to Wiltshire mowing and back to Devon harvesting. Hope this is of interest - happy to hear what you know about the family. Best wishes Peter
